| - 11 schoolchildren injured in Kokrajhar accident | ||
Kokrajhar/Dergaon, April 2 : Seven persons were killed and over 50 injured in three separate road mishaps in Kokrajhar and Golaghat districts since last night. Four persons died on the spot and 44 others, including 11 schoolchildren, were injured when a bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a ditch at Narabari, 4km from Kokrajhar town, around 2.30pm. The bus was travelling from Kokrajhar to Bilisipara in Dhubri when the accident took place. “We were near a bridge when the bus skidded off the road while making way for a truck coming from the opposite direction,” Nirmala Brahma, one of the injured, said. “All on a sudden the bus rolled down turning twice,” Birsa Mondol, another injured passenger, said. The injured were being treated at Kokrajhar Rupnath Brahma Civil Hospital. Fifteen passengers were admitted to the hospital while the rest were released after being administered first aid. The dead have been identified as Jaynal Sheikh, Kalachand Sheikh, Gazi Rehman and Md Raizal Ali — all in the age group between 35 and 40 and residents of Dhubri district. Kokjrajhar deputy commissioner Carol Narzary and BTC member Dhaneswar Goyary rushed to the hospital. Two persons died and 15 sustained serious injuries when a bus collided with a truck in the wee hours today at Dergaon in Golaghat district. According to police, the mishap occurred on National Highway 37 near the ASTC Dergaon station under Dergaon police station around 5.45am. The police said a Jorhat-bound night bus coming from Guwahati (AS-01-B-C-0331) and a coal-laden Guwahati-bound truck (AS-23-G-2544) collided head on. Abdul Ali, 35, the bus driver and the driver of the truck Satish Singh, 45, died on the spot. Of those injured, the condition of Ami Konwer, 35, of Sivasagar, Shekh Saidul, 40, of Calcutta and Subhash Dutta, 41, is stated to be critical and they were shifted to Jorhat civil hospital. Anil Rajkhowa, 46, a businessman of Dergaon, was run over by a speeding vehicle around 8pm last night at the same spot. |
GOLAGHAT, Jan 3 – AIDS infection cases have registered a marked increase in the Golaghat district.
The total number of recorded AIDS cases was 36, out of which 28 victims were male, 8 female and 2 children. The total number of HIV positive cases as of now is 95. Among them, 85 are male, 30 female and 7 children.
According to the ICTC at the KK Civil Hospital here, and updated report said that persons who visited the ICTA were 7,754.
Among them, over 4100 were direct walk-in and 612 were referred by doctors, out of which 104 were migrants and 4,650 indigenous citizens.
The total number of persons tested was 4,473 out of which 3,586 were male and 884 female.
Building inaugurated: The newly constructed building of Kamargaon hospital was recently inaugurated by Dilip Kumar Goswami, the chief engineer of NRL which was financed by NRL. An amount of Rs 4 lakhs 10 thousand was paid by NRL under their social welfare scheme.
On the occasion a meeting was also held under the presidentship of Debendra Nath Bhuyan, a retired headmaster of Mahura High School.
The meeting was addressed by Pranabjyoti Chetia, Chotiu Barokiyal, Dr Azoy Katoky and B Kakoty.
NGO formed: Aimed at all-round development of Doyang Merapani area situated along the Assam-Nagaland border, an-organisation was constituted in at a meeting held on December 29 at Jitpur Public Mancha within Golaghat distinct which was presided over by Krishna Barua.
In the meeting several speakers underlined the burning problems of Doyang-Merapani area. The meeting decided to work unitedly for economic well-being, social and cultural development of the area.
The Doyang Rupantar Aaikya Mancha was subsequently constituted with Lakshmi Kochari as president and Mridul Chutiya as secretary.
Earlier, L Kochari explained the objective of the meeting.
Ordinance issued: By issuing an order under IPC 144, the additional district judge Golaghat banned collection of money donation in the district from businessmen, offices, organisations and shops, besides printing of receipts etc by any organisation.
Further, the district administration banned gathering of five or more persons and holding of meetings at public places and moving with arms. The ordinance also banned playing of cards at public places, wall writings postering on public or government vehicles, hanging of posters, etc. This ordinance was issued in the entire district and until orders violation of such ordinance would invite penal action, the district magistrate’s order mentioned.
Swahid Divas: The 18th annual Kendriya Swahid Divas was celebrated at the District Library conference hall here on December 29 and 39.
The programmes included flag hoisting, swahid tarpan and holding of open session. The sampriti sabha and flag hoisting were performed by Chao Jadav Konwar, president of ATASU. Swahid tarpan was offered by Chao Jyoti Prasad Gogoi, adviser of ATASU, Golaghat district committee.
The open meeting was inaugurated by Chao Purnananda Buragohain, and was presided over by Chao Pramod Barua, founder president of ATASU. The meeting was addressed by Chao Arun Gogoi, founder secretary, Chao Bhaskar Gogoi, ex-secretary of ATASU central committee as appointed speakers.
Dinesh Gogoi, lecture of Dr College, Golaghat delivered a speech as chief guest. The speakers underlined the historical social, economic and cultural contributions of the Tai Ahoms in the country. It may be mentioned here that Sadou Ahom Tai Students’ Union had organised the function.
Harendra Nath Bora, Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat formally inaugurated a milk products sale counter at the campus of the district veterinary hospital office here on December 14.
The local Kamdhenu Milk Products Samabai Sammittee would sell the products. The counter was established under the joint initiative of the DRDA, Golaghat and Milk Development Department.
The inaugural function was attended by Azit Bordoloi, CEO Golaghat Zila Parisad, Hira Prasad Nath, additional DC, Dr S Saikia and district veterinary officer Dr Niloi Bora.
