Appeal to NHRC

Kokrajhar, May 2 : Pressure is mounting on the district administration as women’s organisations from Guwahati moved the National Human Rights Commission to expedite the investigation into the gangrape case.

A homemaker was allegedly raped by six soldiers on April 20. They also submitted a memorandum to Kokrajhar deputy commissioner Donald Gilfellon demanding a judicial inquiry into the case, immediate arrest, security for family members and medical treatment and compensation to the victim.

Representatives of different organisations, including All India Dalit Mahila Adhikar Manch, Assam Mahila Samata Society, Nari Mukti Sangram Samiti, People’s Right Forum, Women in Governance-Assam, North East Network, Kokrajhar Chirang District Sanmilita Samiti and Sadou Assam Pragatishil Nari Sanstha today met the victim.

“We will move the commission so that the victim gets justice,” said Junu Boro, vice-president of Sadou Assam Pragatishil Nari Sanstha.

The victim’s family members had also written to the National Human Rights Commission seeking justice.

The family members sought punishment of the six soldiers involved in the crime, protection of the family from harassment and compensation according to provisions of SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1995.

The district administration ordered a magisterial enquiry into the case, seven days after the rape.
