Bandh hits trade in Guwahati

Guwahati, April 19 : Business activities were disrupted here today following a 12-hour trade bandh called by the Sodou Guwahati Byabasayee Sanstha in protest against a “steep” hike in trade license fee by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation.
Shops in most areas, including Ganeshguri, Chandmari, Bhangagarh, Ambari, Panbazar, Maligaon and Adabari remained closed during the bandh. However, in Fancy Bazar and Lakhtokia, the city’s oldest and busiest business hubs, the bandh generated a mixed response.
Prantosh Roy, general secretary of the sanstha, said the hike in the license fee was three-fold and would impose an additional burden on small traders. He said the GMC was yet to respond to its demand for the withdrawal of the licence fee hike order.
