Poll presiding officer attempts suicide in Assam; voting unaffected

DIPHU (ASSAM): A presiding officer at a polling booth in Autonomous District (ST) constituency on Thursday allegedly attempted suicide by slitting his throat but polling remained unaffected there.

Election office sources said, presiding officer Dinanath Basumatary was found with his throat slit in the bathroom of polling station 40 at Dokmoka, under Howraghat police station, in the morning even before the commencement of polling.

Basumatary was immediately admitted to hospital in a serious condition, the sources said.

Voting at the polling station, however, began at 7am, as per schedule. The exercise there is being conducted under the supervision of the other personnel of the polling team, the sources added.
