EC seeks more forces for Assam hill districts

Guwahati, Apr 12 : The state election commission today expressed concern over the law and order situation in the twin hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar and demanded additional deployment of security forces to ensure violence-free polls in Assam.

"We are concerned about the security of polling personnel and voters in general and have asked the government to take measures and deploy more forces," state Chief Electoral Officer Himanta Narzary told reporters here.

Referring to the recent attack on the convoy of the election observer and the continuing violence in North Cachar hill, Narzary said the deputy commissioners have been asked to to ensure that there was zero casualty of polling personnel.

"An elaborate security plan has been chalked out with one platoon of security force posted for one particular polling station in N C hill district," he said.

Stating there was need for more forces, the CEO said, two choppers have been kept as standby for the twin districts in case of emergency.
