In order to curb the increasing terror attacks in Assam, the state government has planned to set up a specialised body to deal with explosive devices. This was announced by governor Shiv Charan Mathur while he was addressing the winter session of the state assembly. The new specialised body will be constituted on the lines the National Security Guards (NSG) which will deal with bombs, IEDs and other explosive devices.
Mathur stated that the Assam government has planned to take a number of decisions for improving the functioning of police to counter terror incidents in the future. He said that the government is very concerned about the security of the people of the state of Assam. The government has decided to set up a research and analysis wing to study the activities of the ultras apart from installing close-circuit TVs in Guwahati and other major towns in a phased manner. He also said that the government pledged to train and properly upgrade the police force of the state.
The state government has also decided to take up a multi-pronged strategy to deal with the militant groups operating in the state. The government is also willing to hold peace talks with groups willing for a negotiated settlement. The state of Assam was rocked by serial bomb blast on January 1 that claimed six lives apart from injuring several others. Earlier in October 2008, about 67 people were killed in series of bomb blast incidents in different parts of the state.
