Nagaon in final four


Guwahati, Feb 4 : Hosts Nagaon qualified for the semi-final of the senior inter-district cricket tournament defeating Tinsukia by seven wickets in the last two-day elite group league encounter at Nurul Amin Stadium in Nagaon today.
Nagaon, with 17 points, joined Dibrugarh, NF Railway and Silchar for the knockouts to be held later this month.
Conceding a first innings lead of 27 runs on the first day yesterday, Tinsukia today resumed their second innings at 26 for three to be all out for 102 in 45.3 overs before lunch. Set a second innings target of 76 runs for an outright victory, Nagaon achieved it in 17 overs losing three wickets.
In Tinsukia’s second innings, the team’s tail wagged as Pradip Basfore and wicketkeeper-batsman Samarjeet Nath scored 23 and 16 respectively. It was once again spinner Bichitra Baruah who ripped apart the Tinsukia batting with a haul of six for 29, ably supported by Amit Sinha. Baruah had claimed two wickets in the first innings as well. Opener Amit Sinha topscored for Nagaon in the second innings with a strokeful 43 while Bhaskarjyoti Konwar chipped in with 16. Spinner Pankaj Tamuli of Tinsukia claimed two wickets.
In the first innings, Tamuli accounted for six for 29. Danish Syamal and Amit Sinha were the main scorers for Nagaon in the first innings.
